Dating Dave, "The Love Guru"

Hey there! I often get asked if someone should have a “wingman” or “wingwoman” to help them meet new people. If you’re shy or not super experienced at flirting, a wingman or wingwoman can be a total game-changer. Essentially, they go out with you and help you meet people, make approaches, and generally connect with others when you’re feeling shy. You can have any combination you want – a guy with a guy wingman, a guy with a girl wingwoman, etc. Just go with what works best for you!

Personally, I’d recommend a female wingwoman for guys. Here’s why: when a girl sees you, she’ll also see the people you’re with. A group of guys can sometimes come off as rowdy or even competitive, but if you’re with a woman, she’ll be more likely to see that you’re probably not a creep or serial killer. (LOL) Your wingwoman needs to be fun and flirty – she can’t be a wallflower or it just won’t work. Think of her as a lure in the dating pond – she needs to go up to a group of girls and chat with them, then say something like “Oh, my friend is over there. He’s single.”

Let’s say you’re in a bar in Auckland and you see a girl you want to meet. Your wingwoman goes up to her and says something like “Hey, what are you drinking?” and then “Ooh, I want to try that! I’ll order it. Hang on, let me introduce you to my friend Dave.” From there, it’s all clear for Dave to start the conversation with something like “Hey, how’s it going?” If the girl is interested, she might ask something like “How did you guys meet? Are you together?” to see if Dave is available and get a sense of his personality. Dave needs to make it clear that he’s single and the two of them just went to school together.

After that, it’s up to Dave and the girl to see if they have a connection or chemistry. But the important part – breaking the ice – is taken care of. The wingwoman has done her job by helping a shy guy meet a cool girl. And the best part is, you can keep using this technique all night long. If you’re looking for love, the more lures you put in the water, the better your chances of making a connection.

The wingwoman can be a bit touchy-feely with people, but it’s super important that she uses her body language to show that she’s just friends with Dave. She’s there to act as a trusted advisor, confidant, and overall show that Dave is fun to be around, which will attract others.

It might take some time and practice to get the hang of things with a wingman or wingwoman, and that’s totally okay. Just get out there and give it a try – you might be surprised at how quickly you can meet someone.
