I’ve been reading today about just how widespread diabetes is becoming in the western world. Diabetes is a terrible disease when the body stops producing enough insulin to cope with sugar in the diet / bloodstream / body. Over a long period of time it can cause major health problems, as it affects every nerve in the body. From my own perspective, I consider it to be similar to having sandpaper moving through your veins. Not pleasant, and not healthy.

People with diabetes have enough to worry about, but what’s not often mentioned is that diabetes can cause sexual problems. Yes, because every nerve is affected by high blood glucose levels, every sexual response can be affected by diabetes. The effects differ in men and women, but if you’re dating a diabetic, it’s good to be aware of the possible issues that may affect your relationship.

The main issue for males is erectile dysfunction. Not only can this cause issues in relationships, it can even cause severe depression for the sufferer, and the loss of their self esteem / performance. (Note: if your man has erectile dysfunction, this can also be a SIGN of diabetes – get him checked out). Viagra and other drugs may help to alleviate this side effect of diabetes. A more serious condition is retrograde ejaculation – where the semen goes into the bladder instead of going out through the penis at the time of ejaculation. If this is happening, make sure your man sees a doctor as soon as possible.

The main issue for females is vagina dryness, and (I’m told) this can make intercourse very painful. Some women lose interest in sex altogether, or have no sensations in their genital area. When women lose interest in sex, their relationships are bound to suffer. Men are patient – but not forever.

It’s tricky and embarrassing for some people to go to their doctor and talk about their sexual health issues – but it’s something you should do, and the earlier the better. With treatment, some of these issues can be greatly reduced or even eliminated. Keeping a healthy diet, monitoring your blood sugars closely, and having regular health check ups are all good ideas to keep your diabetic sex life healthy. Please note that I’m not a doctor – and there is no substitute for talking to a health professional whenever you have health questions. Stay happy and healthy – and reading this blog!
