During your dating life, you should aim to get acquainted with many different types of individuals. Variety is the spice of life, and trying something (or someone) new occasionally can be liberating. There are various milestones in everyone’s life, and often your tastes in potential partners maps against this. For example, when you’re a young college attendee, meeting another young person of similar age is probably your objective. College provides an incredible opportunity for you to date and meet others.

While college dating may give you incredible and formative thoughts regarding the type of boy or girl you want to end up with in the long term, you definitely need to meet bunches of individuals and get that dating and life experience, before you settle down. College is the ideal time for this – boys and girls pick up and drop their partners frequently and without too much stress. Some college students have traditional boyfriend / girlfriend relationships, some have more intense relationships. One thing is for sure: as college classes change each semester, you’ll likely meet loads of new people.

It’s essential to recall that dating doesn’t have to mean sex or drinking. Truth be told, at college attendee age, it probably shouldn’t mean either of the aforementioned items (note: I’m no prude, and pretty liberal in my thinking – but relationships at that age without sex and alcohol are just simpler). You can’t get to truly know somebody in the event that you’re both highly impeded by liquor / alcohol. Drunken sex is one thing. Having a long term and meaningful relationship is something completely different. Really.

College provides a lot of group opportunities to party and celebrate, and these opportunities are great if you want to meet a partner without the huge pressure of having to ask a guy / girl out that you’ve seen walking by a classroom. At group events, people are less inhibited, and just generally chilled. And that makes the whole “Hi, really like how you look today” type conversations much easier.

Of course, if you are a college student, you don’t have to rely on your college or faculty making an event – you can set up your own. For example, convince your class or fraternity to have a welcome party for all new students on campus – or run a speed date event.

Speed dating is easy to organise. You just need a cluster of tables with a discussion thought starter card placed at every table, one table for every couple. The young ladies sit at the tables, then the first friend (generally guys, but hey, these days anything goes) takes a seat. The girl and guy discuss their discussion starter topic together (and anything else they want to talk about) for 5 minutes. A chime rings, and then the guys move on to the following table, until all guys have met all girls. At the end of the night, girls put voting cards on to photos of the guys they liked, and the guys put voting cards on to the photos of the girls they liked. Phone numbers / email addresses can be swapped. Some guys or girls may luck out and get no votes, others will be surprisingly popular. As a group, have snacks or pizzas together following the results. Find out more about the guy / girl you most liked!

Does speed dating organisation scare you? There’s plenty of other group activities you can arrange at college that could make good dating opportunities for the attendees. For example, you could run cooking classes, bike riding excursions, rock climbing activities, or run a film club evening. Even board games like Monopoly, Twister, and Pictionary can have their place at a games evening… just make sure that all of the games being offered encourage wider group play. Food and drink (alcoholic or not) is always a good idea at such events – it offers a further dimension and way to socialise with others.

Remember in my opening paragraph that I mentioned your objective at college should be to meet and date lots of different types of individuals? Follow the college student dating advice above, stay safe, have a fabulous time, and really enjoy your dating years at college or school.
