Sexual Terminology Glossary

I haven’t found any decent glossaries of sexually related terms online, so I thought I’d create my own. On this dating blog I write about a whole range of topics dealing with love, sex, and relationships, so I thought that getting some understanding of key terminology in this space might be useful for myself, and for you, my readers.

  • Agender: A person who does not identify with any gender.
  • Androgyny: A combination of masculine and feminine characteristics in a person’s appearance or identity.
  • Androgynous: A person who expresses a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics in their appearance or identity.
  • Aromantic: A person who does not experience romantic attraction.
  • Asexual: A person who does not experience sexual attraction.
  • Asexual Spectrum: A range of identities and experiences that fall under the umbrella of asexuality.
  • BDSM: A consensual practice involving bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, and/or sadomasochism.
  • Bigender: A person who identifies as having two distinct gender identities or expressions.
  • Bisexual: A person who is attracted to people of both sexes.
  • Cisgender: A person whose gender identity corresponds with the sex they were assigned at birth.
  • Contraception: Methods used to prevent pregnancy, such as condoms, birth control pills, and intrauterine devices (IUDs).
  • Demiromantic: A person who only experiences romantic attraction after forming a deep emotional connection with someone.
  • Demisexual: A person who only experiences sexual attraction after forming a deep emotional connection with someone.
  • Demisexual spectrum: A range of identities and experiences that fall under the umbrella of demisexuality.
  • Erectile dysfunction: The inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
  • Exhibitionism: A sexual interest in exposing oneself sexually to others without their consent.
  • Fetish: A sexual attraction to a specific object, body part, or activity that is not typically associated with sexual arousal.
  • Foreplay: Sexual activity that occurs before intercourse, such as kissing, touching, and oral sex.
  • Gender dysphoria: A feeling of discomfort or distress that arises from a mismatch between a person’s gender identity and the sex they were assigned at birth.
  • Gender expression: The way a person expresses their gender through their appearance, clothing, behavior, and other characteristics.
  • Gender identity: A person’s internal sense of their own gender, which may or may not correspond with the sex they were assigned at birth.
  • Gender nonconforming: A person who expresses their gender in ways that do not conform to traditional gender expectations or norms.
  • Genderfluid: A person who experiences changes in their gender identity over time or in different contexts.
  • Genderqueer: A person who identifies as neither exclusively male nor exclusively female.
  • Grayromantic: A person who experiences romantic attraction rarely or only under specific circumstances.
  • Graysexual: A person who experiences sexual attraction rarely or only under specific circumstances.
  • Heteroromantic: A person who is romantically attracted to people of a different gender than their own.
  • Heterosexual: A person who is attracted to people of the opposite sex.
  • Homoromantic: A person who is romantically attracted to people of the same gender as their own.
  • Homosexual: A person who is attracted to people of the same sex.
  • Infertility: The inability to conceive a child after a year of trying to conceive.
  • Incest: Sexual activity between close relatives, such as siblings or parent-child relationships.
  • Intersex: A person who is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit typical male or female definitions.
  • Kink: An umbrella term for a wide range of sexual practices and preferences that are considered unconventional or non-traditional.
  • Lithromantic: A person who experiences romantic attraction, but does not desire romantic relationships.
  • Masturbation: Self-stimulation of one’s own genitals for sexual pleasure.
  • Necrophilia: A sexual interest in corpses.
  • Non-binary: A person who identifies as neither exclusively male nor exclusively female.
  • Panromantic: A person who is romantically attracted to people regardless of their gender identity.
  • Pansexual: A person who is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or biological sex.
  • Pedophilia: A sexual interest in children who have not yet reached puberty.
  • Polyamory: A practice of having multiple romantic or sexual partners simultaneously, with the consent of all parties involved.
  • Polysexual: A person who is attracted to multiple genders, but not necessarily all genders.
  • Pornography: Visual or written material that depicts sexual activity for the purpose of arousal or entertainment.
  • Prostitution: The practice of engaging in sexual activities for payment.
  • Queer: An umbrella term for people who identify as not being heterosexual and/or not conforming to traditional gender norms.
  • Sexual dysfunction: A broad category of conditions that interfere with a person’s ability to experience sexual pleasure, such as low libido, difficulty with arousal or orgasm, or pain during intercourse.
  • Sexual fluidity: A person’s capacity to experience changes in their sexual attractions over time or in different contexts.
  • Sexual orientation: A person’s enduring pattern of romantic, sexual, or emotional attraction to others.
  • Sex work: The exchange of sexual services for money or other forms of payment.
  • Skoliosexual: A person who is attracted to people who do not conform to traditional gender expectations or identities.
  • Third gender: A term used to describe a gender identity that is neither male nor female, and is recognized in some cultures around the world.
  • Transgender: A person who identifies with a gender that differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
  • Two-spirit: A term used by some Indigenous peoples to describe a person who identifies as having both a masculine and feminine spirit.
  • Voyeurism: A sexual interest in observing others engaged in sexual activities without their knowledge or consent.
  • Zoophilia: A sexual interest in animals.
